Founding and Early Development
Founded on January 15, 1900, by Dr. Rudolf Alberti in Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains, Deutsche Baryt-Industrie began operations as a traditional mining company. Dr. Rudolf Alberti, a chemist and industrialist, acquired the company and expanded barite mining and the processing of the extracted ores on a large scale. The regional barite deposits in the Harz Mountains, as well as other deposits throughout Germany, formed the basis for the emergence of the barite industry in Bad Lauterberg. Even in this early phase, the company laid the foundation for its later positioning as a producer of high-quality products.
Corporate Development
Until the late 1960s, the company was owned by the Alberti family, marking a long period of family management. This was followed by a structured transformation: Kali Chemie AG and Sachtleben AG joined the company, contributing industrial capacity and expertise. Starting in 2004, the company was owned by Sachtleben Bergbau GmbH & Co. KG and Sachtleben Chemie GmbH. Since 2016, Sachtleben Minerals GmbH & Co. KG has been the sole shareholder of Deutsche Baryt-Industrie GmbH & Co. KG. This ownership structure has enabled the company to focus on its core competencies.
Raw Material Base and Procurement
Originally, production relied on the company’s own raw material reserves from the Harz Mountains and other German deposits. Once these local deposits were fully depleted, the company underwent a strategic shift. Since 1990, high-quality barite raw materials have been sourced on the global market. These initially supplemented the company’s own raw material reserves and, once those were exhausted, completely replaced them. This international sourcing strategy ensures continuous production capacity and provides access to select deposits worldwide.
Modern Technologies and Further Development
The German barite industry has consistently risen to meet the growing demands placed on modern fillers. By expanding its existing facilities with new grinding and classification technologies, the company has been able to further optimize its product quality. Today, Deutsche Baryt-Industrie is recognized worldwide as a “processor” of raw barite from selected deposits. This transformation from a pure mining company to a specialized processor underscores the company’s long-term innovative strength.
